Art and Design

At Christchurch Infant School, children are given the opportunity to explore a wide range of materials and techniques. They are taught a range of skills to improve and refine their work in both 2D and 3D. Art skills are used across the curriculum and children are introduced to the work of a variety of artists and work from many different cultures. They Investigate art, craft and design in the locality and in a variety of genres, styles and traditions. We fell it is important for the children to work on their own and collaboratively, to work with digital art and the outside environment. Children are taught how to appreciate and evaluate both their work, and that of others.

Music

Music is an important part of the life of our school. We especially enjoy singing together, whether in our classrooms, assemblies, Singalongs or whole class celebrations and we also use our voices expressively when speaking chants and rhymes. We listen to a wide range of music of different styles and traditions, such as Bach, Folk and Calypso! We also enjoy listening to live music with different musicians when the opportunity arises. Our Year 2 children get the chance to participate in the Schools Workshop as part of the biennial Music and Arts Festival at Christchurch Priory. We have established good links with Christchurch Junior School where each year group from the Infant School gets the chance to make music together across the year. In the Autumn term, our Year 2 children sing Christmas Carols together and perform one of their own to each other. In the Spring term, our Year 1 children get the chance to hear performers from the Junior School in a special concert. This is a great opportunity to inspire our children for what instruments they could learn when they’re older. In the Summer term, our Foundation children get the chance to make music together with the older children in Year 6, to learn a song together and have a go at playing some amazing giant percussion instruments such as the tubular bells. We hope to continue the tradition of a local schools informal Singalong where local schools send one class to perform to the others at Christchurch Junior School in the Summer term with a grand song to all join in with at the end. We are very grateful to Dorset Music Service for the Singalong Strategy funding and Twynham School which enables this to take place. All children will learn how to play tuned and untuned percussion instruments musically such as a maraca and glockenspiel. Music is taught through a successful scheme called ‘Charanga’ by experimenting with different sounds and being creative through the inter-related dimensions of music. Above all, we encourage children to have fun with music and in turn, develop their self esteem, creativity, sense of achievement and confidence.
