Science

Science focuses on helping children understand the world around them and encourages children to make links between concepts they learn and discover.  We aim to provide a range of experiences and opportunities for children to explore, experience and observe different phenomena. Children are encouraged to be aware of the environment in which they live and the importance of caring for our environment.  School trips, visitors, the local area and school grounds are all used to enhance the science learning which takes place. Children are encouraged to be curious and ask questions about what they notice. Where possible first-hand, practical approaches are used to develop their understanding of scientific ideas including observing changes over a period of time, noticing patterns, grouping and classifying things, carrying out simple comparative tests, and finding things out using secondary sources of information such as books, photographs and videos.  Children use simple measurements and equipment to gather data and begin to use simple scientific language to talk about what they have found out. As with all our curriculum, links are made between the learning in science and other areas of the curriculum.

If you wish to find out more about your child's learning in this subject, please speak to your child's teacher.
